Nonprofit says business key to regulate migration to Sabah

DAVAO CITY – A NONPROFIT group called on the business sector in Mindanao to get involved in the migration process to Sabah so as to avoid labor abuses and sordid tales of workers in Malaysia.

This proposal by the Quezon City-headquartered group IDEALS comes at a time when Amnesty International reported recently that promises of high salaries puts foreign workers in situations of exploitation and abuse.

MANILA — TAIWAN and the United Arab Emirates have the most number of overseas Filipino workers displaced by the global economic crisis, while South Korea had the most number of companies with OFW employees affected.

The latest report by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), as of September 30 last year, showed that about 4,428 OFWs from Taiwan were displaced nearly a year after the United States declared its economy in recession.

PASIG CITY — MANY of the overseas Filipino workers displaced last year by the global economic crisis, and who availed of government’s employment and livelihood assistance packages, are from Calabarzon, Central Luzon, and Central Visayas.

Documents from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) showed that among the country’s provincial regions, displaced OFWs in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), availed most of services.

DAVAO CITY – A GOVERNMENT executive here warns of an increasing number of overseas Filipino workers defaulting on their loans from an economic crisis credit facility.

Zenobia Caro, officer-in-charge of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region XI, said she is worried about the low repayment rate among overseas Filipino workers who borrowed from a 2-year credit facility.
