Finance experts mull overseas Filipinos’ investment fund
DEN HAAG, THE NETHERLANDS -- Development finance experts met in Luxemburg last month and set the stage for a mechanism to channel overseas Filipinos’ money for investment in the Philippines. On the sidelines of a roadshow by nongovernment Economic Resource Center for Overseas Filipinos (Ercof), former Citibank executive, British national Patrick Goodman met with Ercof president Ildefonso Bagasao and Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines (RBAP) president William Hotchkiss III to develop two microfinance investment funds (MFIFs). Migrant advocates stem gov’t tack of taxing higher-earning Pinoys
MANILA -- MIGRANT workers’ rights advocates nipped government’s idea of taxing select Filipinos working overseas to shore up its expenditure program. Persons familiar with the issue told the OFW Journalism Consortium that top finance officials have floated again the idea of lifting the tax exemptions granted in 1997 to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), to the chagrin of some overseas Filipinos. RP mobile phone chips key to tapping OFW money
MANILA -- A THUMBNAIL-SIZE ceramic chip in the Philippines is changing the way cash is couriered from its citizens across continents. This chip, called a SIM card, has also earned smiles from multilateral agencies such as the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank, which, for years, have been egging on banks to bring down the cost of sending money from anywhere in the world. Roadshow finds Pinoy savers in Europe
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM -- THEY were raring to explain the basics of savings and financial literacy among Filipino migrants in the European Union. But the financial literacy advocates on a roadshow early November found out that Pinoys there are ahead of their class. A team coming from the nongovernment Economic Resource Center for Overseas Filipinos (ERCOF) learned from its European sortie that Filipino groups in the continent have long pooled their savings, and are also aware of valuing their hard-earned income. Pinoy winner in Dutch tilt to use prize for hometown
UTRECHT, THE NETHERLANDS – THE Damayang Pilipino sa Nederland won first prize in a Netherlands contest for migrant organizations to think of innovative development projects for their home countries. Jessie Ligan, Damayan member, said the Maria goes to Town project hopes to set up the first public market in her hometown of Magsaysay in Misamis Oriental. JEREMAIAH M. Pinoys help Fil-Am netters win SEAG golds, retrace Filipino roots
MANILA – LIKE a broken record, the rock and roll song Pinoy Ako blurted over the speakers for the nth time. But for tennis player Riza Angela Zalameda, it brought her and other Filipino-American athletes closer home and helped bring honor to a country they left for the United States. The 19-year-old Zalameda, together with fellow Fil-Ams Eric Taino and Cecil Mamiit, won gold medals for the Philippines during the 23rd Southeast Asian Games that the country hosted. JEREMAIAH M.
